Children should have same rights as pets during pandemic, says union

Workers’ union Isotita said on Monday that albeit correct, the measure to allow pets to walk outside as many times as needed amid the Covid-19 crisis is unfair towards children who do not have the same right, the CNA reports.

“Pets can go outside to walk as often as needed everyday, but children are deprived of the right to exercise and recreation — and by extension to stay healthy — as their parents send the only sms they are entitled to for other urgent needs,” Isotita’s vice president Kyriacos Kyriacou said in an announcement.

“So if a parent goes to the supermarket or the pharmacy children are deprived of the right to walk,” he said, adding that attention should also be paid to single parents who have to choose between walking with their children and covering basic needs.

He finally called on the Commissioner for Children’s Rights to ensure that parents receive the required support from their workplace to be able to work from home “and not face threats or be forced to take their children to work and be put at risk,” warning that in the public sector there are issues with non-compliance to the announced measures.
