Bone marrow flown to German patient from Larnaca airport amid adverse climate

Relevant News

Bone marrow from a compatible donor at the Karaiskakio Foundation in Nicosia was transported from Larnaca airport to Frankfurt on Thursday amidst stringent measures and a shortage of flights caused by the Covid-19 outbreak.

Despite the adverse circumstances, including rigorous medical checks and submission of documents by the person that would be handed over the package, the extraction of the bone marrow by a volunteer donor was performed on Thursday morning followed by a large-scale operation set up by Hermes Airports, operator of Larnaca and Paphos airports, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Immigration Department, Lufthansa’s representative in Cyprus and LGS handling services.

A medical professional from Frankfurt landed in Larnaca on Thursday afternoon, who after being subjected to all the necessary checks, was taken to the transit area of the airport and was handed over the shipment by Cypriot authorised personnel. The German doctor then flew back to Franfkurt on the same flight.

The head of the Karaiskakio Foundation took to social media saying: “The latest bone marrow that will save a life is headed to its destination following great efforts by the Ministry of Health and airport authorities. We thank you all and especially our volunteer donor. The closing of the airport renders future donations almost impossible…”
