Ambassador Andreas Hadjichrysanthou presented his credentials to the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA),  Michael W. Lodge, as the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to ISA during a virtual ceremony held on Thursday, noting that Cyprus underscores the critical importance of international law as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

“As an island State and a maritime nation, Cyprus attaches great importance to the work of ISA, especially the protection of oceans and the sustainable use of marine resources in the international seabed area,” Ambassador Hadjichrysanthou said during the ceremony.

Cyprus, he said, “underscores the critical importance of international law as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which is the fundamental pillar for ocean governance where ISA plays a crucial role as it promotes the effective and uniform implementation of the international legal regime of the Area.”

Welcoming the Cypriot Ambassador, Lodge said he looks forward “to working closely with him to ensure further that the legal regime for the Area contained in the Convention is strengthened as we move towards the sustainable development of seabed mineral resources for the benefit of all humanity.”
