95% of final year pupils showed up on Monday, says Education Minister

During his visit of a Nicosia Lyceum on the first day of return to school of final year pupils in Lyceums and Technical Schools, Education Minister Prodromos Prodromou said that things are running smoothly and that attendance reached 95%, adding that those who stayed at home belong to vulnerable groups, philenews reported.

Speaking to the press, Prodromou said that adhering to hygiene protocols is the foremost priority and any issue that arises will be dealt with.

Addressing reports of problems with taking the pupils’ temperature, Prodromou said that as per the protocol temperatures will be taken periodically. On masks, he said that they are available in schools but their use is not obligatory.

Separately, President of secondary school teachers union OELMEK Costas Hadjisavvas said that during the first period of classes today, final year pupils were informed of the protective measures they need to adhere to while in school premises.

Speaking on Alpha TV, Hadjisavvas said that some pupils did not show up for class, who he said are those belonging to vulnerable groups, pupils whose relatives belong to vulnerable groups and those whose parents are worried due to the virus and did not allow them to attend.

He added that there was an issue with taking the pupils’ temperature before they entered the school building mentioning that it was not possible to implement this process today.

He concluded saying that the children are concerned and anxious and assured that “teachers will do everything in their power to support final year pupils.”
