31 test positive for Covid-19 amid signs of stabilisation

Another 31 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Cyprus, bringing the total to 595, including 10 at the British Bases the Health Ministry said on Friday.

Announcing the results Dr Leontios Kostrikis said that these were below those of yesterday and gave grounds for some optimism, while underlying the need for vigilance.

But he warned that 31 was still a high number.

“The numbers allow us to retain our optimism that the ray of light referred to by President Anastasiades will remain visible if continue to adhere to the measures,” he said.

Dr Marios Loizou struck a similar tone saying that the efforts are beginning to deliver results, but there must be no relaxation.

“Studying the statistics announced yesterday (the epidemiological study) and the stabilisation of numbers at the ICUs, I can say that the effort we are all carrying out together has started to bring results. This is something we achieved together, and I think we are allowed to say so,” he said.

“On the other hand, there must be no relaxation to this effort.”

According to the Health Ministry the 31 new cases were found after 819 tests

Of the 31 new cases announced today:

11 were detected after tracing

1 had a travel history

15 are being investigated

Of the 18 previous cases for which tracing was still underway, 11 have been traced, one is a member of UNFICYP with a travel history and the remainder are still being investigated.

The 595 Covid-19 cases were found after a total of 16,308 tests. Of the 595 cases, 429 were infected here through contacts,

Moreover 58 patients who had been hospitalised for coronavirus have recovered and been discharged.

Dr Marios Loizou said that at 3 pm, there were 28 Covid-19 patients at Famagusta General Hospital four of them in the increased care unit. Five people were discharged.

Eleven patients are intubated, two at the ICU of Limassol Hospital and 9 at the ICU of Nicosia Hospital. All are in steady, but critical condition.

Another 10 Covid-19 patients are in other hospitals. One person at Nicosia Hospital no longer requires intubation.
