Health Minister calls emergency meetings as new covid cases spike

Relevant News

Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou on Tuesday called for an emergency meeting first with hospital authorities and then with epidemiology experts after an apparent spike in new coronavirus cases.

New cases in Cyprus on Monday rose to an alarming 302, most in coastal Limassol where the number recorded over the past couple of weeks is the highest within districts.

Cyprus eased restrictions in certain sectors, including schools, on Monday.

Hospital officials are expected to brief the minister on the state facilities’ readiness to tackle a potential third wave of the virus in mid-March.

Hospital authorities have already made clear they are operating on a worse-case scenario basis.

This would see the deployment of over 300 beds in Covid wards and around 65 in Intensive Care Units.
