The Coast Guard and Marine Police have been placed on high alert after three more boats carrying migrants were detected off the coast of Cape Greco on Monday afternoon.
The boats were spotted on radar just hours after five other boats carrying 271 people arrived on the island.
The number of people on board the three new boats is unknown, but authorities are expecting a significant number.
Patrol boats are on their way to the scene to escort the boats to shore.
