Police also to be investigated over “State Mafia” book

Relevant News

The role of the Cyprus Police will be examined in the context of the investigation into the allegations made in the book by journalist/researcher Makarios Drousiotis, “State Mafia.”

According to reliable information from Phileleftheros, based on the initial assessment of the book by the Independent Authority Against Corruption, there arose a matter for investigation of deliberate acts in relation to the police force.

Specifically, Drousiotis in his book presents personal testimonies when he discovered that he was being monitored through software that previously infected his electronic devices.

He describes, among other things, the reaction of members of the Police when he brought to their attention the suspicions and evidence showing that he was a victim of surveillance.

In his book, he expressed the position that members of the Police were not willing to investigate what he had reported.

This aspect, therefore, is included in the part of the written work transmitted by the Independent Authority Against Corruption to the four inspection officers, who undertook the investigation of the issues arising from the book “State Mafia.”

In this case, what is being attributed to police personnel are possible actions, which may constitute abuse of power on their part.

The four inspection officers have an expanded scope in their investigation, based on their mandate.

The officials of the Authority, long before they settled on the inspection officers, read the book and divided the chapters and subchapters according to each case that emerged.

Information suggests that certain parts of the book have not been transmitted to the inspection officers, as they relate either to highly technical issues or to actions of individuals abroad.

However, the position is expressed that the inspection officers have no limitations on their investigative work.

The key figure in the investigation, however, is the former President, Nikos Anastasiades, and what is attributed to him in the book, which has been the subject of disputes in the past 24 hours between the former head of state and Makarios Drousiotis.

The issues to be investigated include, among other things, the Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev and what happened in Cyprus after the latter’s divorce.

In the book, the role of a large law firm and its relationship with the then President of the Republic, peculiar procedures of the Parliament for legislative amendments, judicial decisions favoring the Russian oligarch, and capital transfers were highlighted.

The experienced Australian lawyer, Gabrielle Louise McIntyre, who will head the investigations, will come to Cyprus at the beginning of next month.

From Monday, March 4th, she will be on our island and will have the opportunity to conduct proceedings for the best possible coordination with her colleagues, the other inspection officers.

Her work will be assisted by Cypriot lawyers Charilaos Chrysanthou, Orestis Nikitas, and Andreas Efthymiou.

It has not been clarified whether there will be hearings during her stay in Cyprus, that is, whether witnesses will be called to testify in the context of the investigation.
