The Colombian diplomat Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar has been appointed as the new Special Envoy to Cyprus by the UN Secretary-General. Cuellar served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia between 2010 and 2018. She also headed her country’s mission to the UN and served as an ambassador to Venezuela.
The Republic of Cyprus granted its consent today to the appointment of Ms. Cuellar.
The approval falls within the agreed framework and in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council, as stated by the Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis.
Simultaneously, Mr. Letymbiotis expressed hope that there would be a similarly positive response to the appointment from the other side as soon as possible.
He reiterated, “our sincere political will and readiness to resume negotiations from where they have been interrupted, with the aim of achieving a sustainable and definitive settlement of the Cyprus issue. Our desire for a solution with a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality remains strong.”
