Larnaca’s historic Agios Ioannis parish set for regeneration

Relevant News

The traditional parish of Agios Ioannis in Larnaca is set for a major makeover, according to plans unveiled by the Larnaca Municipality this week.

Despite its historical and archaeological significance, including the Church of Agios Ioannis, the first Metropolis of Larnaca, the area has fallen into disrepair. To address this, the regeneration project aims to breathe new life into the parish.

“The roads are unsafe for pedestrians and people with disabilities,” said Mayor Andreas Vyras. “This project will improve and reconstruct existing roads, widen sidewalks, and upgrade the entire infrastructure.”

The plans include a complete overhaul, transforming the area into a modern, yet historically sensitive space. Expect wider walkways, improved lighting, and a revamped drainage system. The project will also prioritize green spaces and create a more pedestrian-friendly environment.

“The regeneration will promote alternative mobility options for pedestrians, cyclists, and people with disabilities,” said Georgia Loizou, representative of the Polytia Armos Office.

The project isn’t just about aesthetics; it aims to create a vibrant community hub. New shops, restaurants, and recreation areas are planned, generating jobs and attracting visitors throughout the day.

However, the project hasn’t been without its delays. Initial plans faced setbacks due to ongoing works by the Larnaca Sewerage Board and the discovery of archaeological finds. Despite these hurdles, construction is expected to begin by the end of 2024.

“The tender announcement is expected by the end of this year,” Loizou confirmed. “The construction itself will take approximately 24 months, with a total budget of €7 million plus VAT.”

The regeneration of Agios Ioannis Parish is a significant undertaking for Larnaca. It promises to restore the area’s historic charm while transforming it into a lively and accessible space for residents and visitors alike.
