Investigation uncovers lack of permits in Engomi blast

Relevant News

It appears that modifications were made without permits to a three-story house in Engomi, where a powerful explosion occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

Yesterday, the investigations of authorities were intensive, to ascertain the causes of the explosion and simultaneously to clarify whether the modifications had the necessary permits.

According to what was reported on philenews by the Police Spokesperson, Christos Andreou, investigators informed that at first glance it appears that no permits were issued for the modifications made to the space.

“Criminal offences may arise, and some individuals may be brought to court.”

Mr. Andreou emphasized that while changes were made, neither the Fire Service nor the Town Planning Department were called upon to grant the necessary permits, with investigations ongoing.

Finally, he pointed out that the 18-year-old burn victim provided some information to the Police, which is being investigated.

It is reminded that according to what was reported to Phileleftheros by the Mayor of Engomi, Zacharias Kyriakou, the building obtained its initial permit in 1976 and received the final modification permit in 1988 for the construction of a three-story building, with two shops on the ground floor and parking space.

“What we are investigating is whether modifications were made, what they are, and whether the changes made to the building received town planning approval.”

No leakage was detected.
