House leader reacts to Azerbaijan’s intend to recognise occupied areas

The President of the House, Annita Demetriou, will send a letter to the President of the Azerbaijani Parliament and European counterparts due to Azerbaijan’s intention for “inter-parliamentary” cooperation with the “parliament” of the occupied areas.

She also called on the President of the Republic to convene the National Council again.

In statements after the event of the Bank of Cyprus “Youth Ask”, the President of the House stated that “we are informed that Azerbaijan intends to do such a thing. We must stop it,” noting that she has prepared a letter of protest to her counterparts to condemn such an act.

Additionally, she said she will send a letter directly to the President of the Azerbaijani Parliament and will raise the issue at the meeting of the Presidents of the EU Parliaments to be held in Spain in the coming days.

“Unfortunately, this is not the first time Azerbaijan has employed such tactics or made such attempts. We must once again do everything in our power to stop it. It is unacceptable and condemnable,” she said.

She added that there are already sanctions against Azerbaijan from the Council of Europe, “but even so, such actions cannot go without strong condemnation and without utilising any political and diplomatic means we have.”

Furthermore, Demetriou said she will meet with the Foreign Minister, Konstantinos Kombos, at noon, and this is one of the topics they will discuss to coordinate efforts.

“Unfortunately, after 50 years, this is our greatest concern, that some do not consider in any way that time can either entrench fait accompli or justify such behaviour. No matter how many years pass, we will not accept such a thing. We will do everything in our power, and therefore we propose that the only solution is the solution,” she said, emphasising that “we must and want to support every effort to restart negotiations within the agreed framework of the Bizonal Bicommunal Federation with political equality. There is no other way, otherwise, we will have to face such and worse every year.”

That is why, she stressed, “we call once again on the President of the Republic. There should be a convening of the National Council, to see where we stand, to be informed, and to see how we can fortify with a strategy the plan of the Republic of Cyprus, how we want to proceed, and to support this effort with the personal envoy of the Secretary-General, because we are very concerned about what we see being published and the developments we have to manage daily,” she said.
