Holy Monastery of St. Habakkuk: demands for new explanations for the environmental scandal

Relevant News

Two separate applications were submitted to permit illegal developments at the Holy Monastery of St. Habakkuk. Part of the developments and the proposed road leading there fall within the Natura 2000 network. Neither of the two applications has been approved, while as regards the erection of illegal buildings, the case has been taken to court by the Nicosia District Administration.

According to Phileleftheros, following this development, the Environment Department sent new letters on Friday both for the construction of a building with cells and ancillary areas and for the registration of a road leading to the Holy Monastery of St. Habakkuk of the Holy Metropolis of Tamassos and Orini.

The first letter is addressed to the Planning Department for the buildings and the second to the Provincial Administration for the road network.

The preparation of an Environmental Impact Assessment by the Community Council and by the Holy Monastery of St. Habakkuk, the submission of the information form, and their assessment and approval by the competent Environmental Authority will be necessary to ensure that the construction works will not harm Natura 2000 sites.
