Two historic aircraft recently acquired by the Cypriot company Zela Aviation are poised to revive beautiful memories from the past, unveiling a treasure trove of aviation history in Greece and Cyprus.
The two aircraft, abandoned at the Ellinikon International Airport since 2001, hold significant historical value.
The first aircraft is a BAC1-11 adorned in the colors of the Hellenic Air Force.
The aircraft was formerly part of Cyprus Airways’ fleet, and is one of the few of its kind worldwide.
Following maintenance, it will be donated to the Municipality of Lavrio to find its place near the city’s port.
While the initial plan was to transport the aircraft to Cyprus with the historic colors of Cyprus Airways, the current stage deems the transfer process particularly challenging.
The second aircraft is a Boeing 727 purchased in 1968 by Aristotle Onassis for the legendary fleet of Olympic Airways
Once restored and renovated, this aircraft will be preserved until a final decision is made regarding the hosting location.
Andreas Christodoulides, the President of Zela Aviation, stated that these two aircraft are integral parts of the history of Greek and Cypriot aviation. Exhibiting these treasures to the public will offer an opportunity for people, especially the younger generation, to travel back in time and explore the marvelous world of the aviation industry, he added.
Notably, the transportation and reassembly of the two aircraft will be handled by the company Notis Cranes.
