High concentrations of dust prompt health warning

Relevant News

High concentrations of dust in the atmosphere have prompted a health warning from the Department of Labour Inspection.

The department said in a statement that the dust contains small inhalable particles that can harm human health.

As a result, the public, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory illnesses, are advised to avoid circulating in open spaces until the phenomenon subsides.

Employers are also being urged to take measures to protect their employees who work in open spaces. This includes providing them with appropriate personal protective equipment, such as masks.

The latest hourly measurements of dust concentration showed that the levels in Nicosia were 99.6 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3), which is nearly double the daily limit of 50 μg/m3. Levels in other cities were also above the limit, with Limassol at 83.1 μg/m3, Larnaca at 80.0 μg/m3, Paralimni at 72.0 μg/m3, Paphos at 64.4 μg/m3, Zygi at 58.3 μg/m3, and Ayia Marina Xyliatou at 52.6 μg/m3.
