Electricity self-consumption in Cyprus on remarkable rise, data show

Relevant News

A total of 45,850 photovoltaic systems for electricity self-consumption were installed in Cyprus by July 2023 through available net-metering, net-billing and self-production schemes, according to latest official data.

Their total capacity was around 256 MW which marks a remarkable increase of 66% compared to July 2022, Philenews reports.

At the same time, the increased interest in installing self-consumption photo-voltaic systems will continue and get stronger in 2024 due to support schemes provided by the Ministry of Energy.

Specifically, net-metering is an agreement where people who generate electricity through photovoltaic panels in Cyprus get a deduction on their electricity bill.

If the generation of electricity exceeds the consumption, the excess is calculated for a reduction on the following electricity bill. However, if the consumption is more than the generation of electricity, the difference is billed.

As for the net-billing scheme, this is applied to commercial and industrial buildings, houses, public buildings, military camps, schools, agricultural and animal husbandry units. As well as to fishing enterprises with the purpose of generating electricity for own use.

The data also shows that the share of electricity production from renewable energy systems for the year 2022 amounted to 17.2% of Gross Final Consumption of Electricity. This marks an increasing trend year by year, mainly in solar thermal energy, solar photovoltaics and wind energy.

Renewable energy sources, that is wind, solar and biomass, accounted for a share of 13.8 % of gross primary energy production in 2022, with the remainder coming mainly from petroleum products (86.2 %).
