Ecology party bring Akamas to the attention of European institutions

Relevant News

The Ecologists’ Movement has brought the issue of road works in Akamas to the European Union at the level of the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the European Green Party, the movement decided.

The movement’s announcement:

The Executive Secretariat of the Ecologists’ Movement has approved an action plan for Akamas, including activities in Cyprus and abroad, such as a signature collection campaign, a concert for Akamas, a documentary, a protest gathering against the projects, and activism at the Ministry of Agriculture.

As the Ecologists’ Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation, we warned the government that we would not accept any superficial and communicative handling of the issue.

The scheduled visit of the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Xenophontos, on the upcoming Saturday, December 16, to the region must have substantive content. The Minister of Agriculture must satisfy the demands of environmental organizations for the control of technical specifications and final construction plans for the road projects by the Ad Hoc Committee to align with the terms of the Special Ecological Assessment.

All these cannot be done within the narrow timetable set by the government since the restart of the projects has already been announced on Monday, December 18.

The government must seriously consider our request for a review of the philosophy of road network planning in a way that minimizes the impact on nature from the construction of the necessary and only road network for organized public access to the protected area.
