DIKO questions ELAM leader’s role in Saint Habakkuk scandalĀ

Relevant News

The Democratic Party (DIKO) has issued a statement raising questions about the involvement of ELAM President Christos Christou in the recent scandal at the Habakkuk Monastery.

While acknowledging that criminal offenses may have been committed by certain monks, DIKO emphasizes that this does not implicate the entire Church.

The party expressed its support for the institution of the Church of Cyprus and lamented the negative impact of the scandal on the faith of believers and the Church’s reputation.

DIKO maintains that the alleged actions at the monastery do not represent the Church as a whole or the contributions made by countless clergy members with dedication and love.

However, DIKO raises several political questions surrounding the incident:

  1. Reason for ELAM President’s Presence: Why was Christos Christou present at the scene?
  2. Official Capacity: If he was there as a Throne Commissioner, why was he the only one summoned and not the other Throne Commissioners?
  3. Unofficial Involvement: If he was not there as a Throne Commissioner, in what capacity was he present?
  4. Masked Individuals: Why were masked individuals at the scene of a possible criminal offense? Who invited them?
  5. Identity and Affiliations: Who are these masked individuals, and what is their connection to ELAM and its President?
  6. Police Investigation: How will the police investigate ELAM President’s involvement considering his parliamentary immunity?

DIKO stresses that these questions must be thoroughly investigated by the relevant authorities.

The party warns against the message that masked individuals can act with impunity.

The scandal at the Habakkuk Monastery has sparked public outrage and raised concerns about the conduct of certain individuals associated with the Church and political parties. DIKO’s statement highlights the need for transparency and accountability in addressing these allegations.
