“Cyprus must find itself on the right side of history”, DISY MP says

Haris Georgiadis, the MP of the Democratic Rally (DISY) and chairman of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, condemned Iran’s missile attack on Israel.

Specifically, in his statement, he said:

We unequivocally condemn Iran’s missile attack on Israel. Despite the fact that the attack was repelled by Israeli air defence and allied forces, its scope and threats from the Tehran regime heighten our concerns about the destabilisation of the wider region.

As a member state of the EU maintaining strategically important relations with Israel, as well as excellent relations with moderate Arab countries in the region, the Republic of Cyprus must find itself on the right side of history. It must also highlight its role as a pillar of security and stability.

Our country is safe, but this should not lead us to complacency. On the contrary, the volatile situation and the increase in asymmetric threats necessitate significant enhancement of our defence and deterrent capabilities. In the same context, a strategic pathway for building relationships and ultimately Cyprus’s accession to NATO is imperative. This is a steadfast position of the Democratic Rally.

The tumultuous developments in the Middle East once again show that there are no frozen conflicts, nor can open wounds remain. We must ensure that the termination of Turkish occupation and the reunification of our homeland will not only ensure the safety of all Cypriots but will also contribute decisively to the stability of the entire region.

Emphasis should also be given to addressing potential economic impacts on our economy. The foundations of our economy are certainly stable, due in part to the prudent policies of our decade-long governance. However, vigilance and readiness to take measures are required. The same preparedness is needed regarding the handling of new, increased migration pressures, both through the required support of the EU.

In all these matters, government policy must focus more on substance and less on communication. What should concern the government, however, is the adequacy of our state to confront any disinformation campaign, hostile propaganda, and the spread of fake news. An effort in which the media also play a role.
