The Mayor of Aglantzia, Andreas Constantinou, characterized the “Pay as You Throw” system as the only tool for cheaper services to citizens, while reassuring the public that any increase in fees is not justified, not supported by evidence, and there is no intention from the Municipal Authorities for it to happen in the near future.
In his statement, Mr. Constantinou noted that the “Pay as You Throw” system is now legislation and is here to stay, constituting a fairer taxation system as citizens pay fewer fees the less waste they generate.
He further emphasizes that similar practices are implemented in most European Union countries and reward ecological sensitivity and waste sorting at the source with reduced fees.
“We have already gained the necessary experience to fully exploit the advantages of the institution but also to address any weaknesses. We should all work in this direction,” he concluded.
