Abandoned Rex Cinema in Larnaca could soon come back to life

Abandoned Rex Cinema at Vasileos Pavlou Square in coastal Larnaca could soon come back to life if a proposal for its rejuvenation gets the green light.

This is what Philenews reported on Wednesday, adding that Larnaca Municipality is considering the possibility of creating a Cinema Centre there. And, apart from film screenings, it will also pave the way for the city to become a filming location.

Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras said the proposal was presented by Michalis Kalopedis, head of the city’s Cinema Club and a film producer himself.

“This is a proposal which is gaining momentum” he also said before adding that there is also second proposal before the Municipality from the Larnaca 2030 organization. This is for the creation of Larnaca Peoples’ Museum and it is also under consideration but could be set up in another place.

Kalopedis’ proposal concerns the creation of a home for independent cinema that will produce, support and promote culture and Larnaca city.

The Larnaca Cinema Centre is to be a non-profit organization with the Municipality as its main shareholder.

The mission of the Centre will be to promote Larnaca as a filming location, provide facilities to local and foreign productions through a specialised film office and manage the infrastructure that will be created at REX.

The ultimate goal is to create conditions for film productions to be based in Larnaca – something that will also strengthen the local economy.
