Orthopaedic surgeon suspended from GHS

Relevant News

The Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) has suspended the contract of a specialist doctor, specifically an orthopaedic surgeon, following complaints from beneficiaries who claimed that the doctor was registering services in their name in the General Health System (GHS) software without them ever receiving them.

The first report about this particular doctor, who reportedly had been previously penalised with compensation cuts due to abuses he had committed, came from a beneficiary who, after visiting the orthopaedic surgeon, received the relevant informational message in their email.

The beneficiary realised that the doctor had registered services in the GHS software that they had not received and consequently informed the HIO about it.

When the HIO conducted the necessary investigation, it found, after communicating with citizens who had visited the doctor in question, that the services the beneficiaries claimed to have received were not consistent with the services for which the orthopaedic surgeon was seeking compensation.

For this reason, the Organisation decided to suspend the doctor’s contract in order to conduct a more detailed investigation.

It is reported that this is not the first time the HIO has suspended a doctor’s contract following similar complaints.

Some doctors, whose cases have previously come to light in the public eye, have been permanently expelled from the GHS.
