Consumption of meat in Cyprus is on the rise year after year, according to latest state statistics which also show that pork is their favourite.
Specifically, 318,948 pigs were slaughtered for consumption between January-July 2019, up by 0.49% over the same period in 2018 and down by 0.05% the same period in 2017. A total of 560,255 pigs were slaughtered in 2018, while that number was 574,158 in 2017.
Consumption of lamb and goat meat is also on the rise, according to the data. By July 2019, a total of 98,635 sheep had been slaughtered, of which 82,643 were lambs and 68,988 goats. In comparison, a total of 92,811 sheep were slaughtered, of which 77,400 lambs and 61,397 goats the same period last year.
In 2017, 86,499 sheep were slaughtered for consumption, of which 72,694 were lambs and 54,633 goats. If this year’s current upward trend continues, it could lead to a new record, considering that a total of 169,725 sheep were slaughtered in 2018 including 144,623 lambs and 109,723 goats.
As far as cattle is concerned, the situation is somewhat different. A total of 9,554 cattle were slaughtered by July this year (including bulls, cows, heifers, calves). This marks a decrease of 3.02% since a total of 9,852 cattle were slaughtered the same period in 2018.
But at the same time it records an increase of 9.31% from 2017 when 8,740 cattle were slaughtered during that period and the year’s total was 16,854. A total of 16,579 cattle were slaughtered in 2017.
As for the consumption of chicken, the number is sky-rocketing. Specifically, a total of 7,436,095 chicken were slaughtered between January and July this year marking an increase of 3.11% (7.211.540 chicken) compared to the same period last year and 3.50% from 2017 (7.184.511 chicken). It looks like the overall number of 12,705,037 chicken slaughtered in 2018 is one to be surpassed this year.
As for turkeys, the main slaughter takes place in December because of the Christmas holiday and therefore no data is available for this year. However, 2018 saw a decline to 29,504 compared to 25,479 slaughters in 2017. In 2016, a total of 24,229 turkeys were slaughtered.
