The President of the Cyprus Association of Renewable Energy Enterprises, Fanos Karantonis, made a valid statement yesterday regarding the overproduction of energy from renewable sources during periods of low electricity demand.
As the installation of commercial renewable energy parks and thousands of photovoltaic systems for self-production continues at a rapid pace, leading to the rejection of 70-75% of green energy on many days in spring and autumn, Karantonis commented that we are “speeding at 100 km per hour towards a wall.”
Even at this late hour, a public dialogue must be initiated to assist the competent authorities in making decisions about the country’s energy needs for the coming years. The issue of reducing self-production should not even be considered.
Nor should there be any further delay in the operation of cooperatives by local authorities and organisations for the operation of photovoltaic parks based on the model of energy communities already functioning in other EU countries.
Because these policies ensure cheaper electricity. What remains is the control or limitation of energy production from commercial-use parks.
