“We should not worry about the dams,” said the Water Development Department in response to our report yesterday, because “they (the dams) have been designed with return periods of about 100 years” and for over 50 years “have been operating safely.”
Okay, we won’t worry, but they need to explain what it means when in the Department’s report, regarding the Polemidia dam, we read: “The increase in extreme weather phenomena is a fact and there is no question of whether there will be flood flow in the Garyllis river, but when it will occur.”
And that “as a result of legal or illegal interventions in the riverbed upstream of the dam, the water passage has been restricted, and under the current conditions, it is practically impossible to accommodate a significant flood. This will result in the destruction of properties and loss of lives.”
Well, we’re not worried now, but the question is, when do you want us to start worrying?
