UK colonial-era Cyprus showcased at Leventis Museum

Relevant News

The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia on Monday opened its doors to the public, showcasing the newly renovated British colonial-era hall (1878-1960).

In his address, President Christodoulides lauded the museum’s pivotal role over the past four decades. The Leventis Municipal Museum has consistently enriched the cultural tapestry of the region, providing fresh museum experiences to its audience. Positioned as a contemporary cultural hub, the museum is dedicated to preserving, documenting, conserving, and promoting the history of Cyprus, with a particular focus on Nicosia, he said.

The colonial-era hall, now restored, invites visitors to embark on a journey through history with a modern museum perspective. The President highlighted the accessibility of this experience, catering to both younger and adult audiences.

Anastasios Pavlos Leventis, President of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, outlined the thematic richness of the new hall. Through a simple, sleek, and minimalist museum design, the space vividly portrays key aspects of the era—ranging from the strict British administration and a return to European influences to advancements in literature, arts, trade, and the pivotal events of the 1950s, including the liberation struggle of EOKA, he said.

Mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis praised the museum’s innovative approaches and the efforts of its team and advisors. The revamped hall serves as a dedicated showcase of Nicosia’s evolution—from its colonial past to its current European identity, he said.

Themes such as trade, education, Cypriot society during that era, the legal system, fashion, the establishment of the Municipality of Nicosia, and the fight for freedom are intricately woven into the narrative of the new hall.

The renovation project, conceived in 2020 under the leadership of former Director Demetra Theodotou Anagnostopoulou, reached fruition under the guidance of the current Museum Director, Jenny Liberopoulou Savvidou.

The hall’s collections were expertly curated by Deputy Director Maria Patsalosavvi. Historical research and text editing was undertaken by historian Antigone Heraclides, museum study by architect Naya Savvidou, architectural renovation by Karine Georgiadou, and the design identity by Appios Creative Studio.

The public is invited to explore the exhibition at the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 16:30.
