Roads to Troodos closed as cold snap continues

All roads to Troodos and several other mountain roads are closed because of snow and ice, police said on Wednesday morning. The cold snap is set to continue today with temperatures forecast to edge up as from tomorrow.

Tuesday night saw snow falling in Troodos and lower altitudes, and the met office said scattered showers and snow are possible on Wednesday.

The snow on Mount Olympus is at 70 cm and in Troodos square at 40 cm.

Parts of Cyprus, particularly in the Limassol district were affected by power outages last night as strong winds uprooted trees and electricity poles.

Road update

All roads to Troodos (Prodromos-Troodos, Karvouna-Troodos, Platres-Troodos) are closed to all vehicles.

The Palechori-Agros, Alonas-Agros, Polystipos-Lagoudera, Lagoudera-Chandria and Alona-Polystipos roads are also closed to all vehicles.

In the Paphos district the Amargetis-Kelokedara road is closed because of flooding of the Zyripilli river while flooding of the Xeros road has closed the Galataria-Salamiou road. Tselefos Bridge remains closed.  The Panayia-Statos-Ayios Photios and the Arminou-Filousa roads are also closed because of mudslides and rock falls.

The following roads are open only to cars with four wheel drive and those equipped with snow chains:

Limassol district

Pera Pedi -Mandria-Platres, Moniatis-Platres, Amiandos-Karvounas, Karvounas-Kyperounda-Chandria, Chandria-Agridia, Kyperounda-Dima, Ayios-Theodoros-Papoutsa- Kalo Chorio-Agros, Kato Mylos -Potamitissa, Trimiklini-Pelendri, Moniatis-Pera Pedi, Saittas-Amiandos, Zoopigi-Ayios Theodoros-Palechori, Kalo Chorio -Ayios Constantinos, Sykopetra-Farmakas, Yerasa-Kalo Chorio, Yerasa-Louvara, Kividia-Omodhos and Prastio-Pachna.

Morphou area:
Pedoulas-Prodromos, Pedoulas-Pinewood-Kakopetria, Prodromos-Lemythou, Prodromos-Trooditissa-Platres, Kakopetria-Karvounas, Pedoulas-Moutoulas, Pedoulas-Kykkps, Kambos-Stavros tis Psokas, Kalopanayiotis-Moutoulas and Ayios Demetrios-Paliomylos-Lemythou-Kaminaria-Tris Elies.

Nicosia district:
Apliki-Palechori, Palechori-Askas-Fterikoudi, Fterikoudi-Alona, Alona-Platanistasa, Palechori-Farmakas and Farmaka-Yourri.

Larnaca district: 
Lefkara-Vavatsinia, Vavatsinia-Ayios Vavatsinias, Vavatsinias-Macheras, Odos-Farmakas and Odou-Ora.

Paphos district: 
Stroumbi-Ayios Tryphonos, Polemi Stroumbious-Stroumbi Paphos, Pentalia-Galataria-Kilinia, Panayia-Asproyias-Kannaviou and Pretori-Ayios Nicolaos Salamiou.

Police said that the road network is dangerous because of rain or ice in many areas and drivers are urged to be particularly careful.

Drivers are being cautioned to drive slowly and to keep a safe distance from other vehicles.

Weather forecast:

Today there will be intervals of sunshine and of cloud and there is a possibility of isolated showers and snow in the mountains. Temperatures will be 11 C inland and on the east and north coasts, around 13 C on the remaining coasts and -1 in the higher mountains.

Tonight will be mainly clear with increased cloud cover in places and fog in places, Temperatures will fall to 3 C inland, around 5 C on the south and east coasts, around 7 C on remaining coasts and -3 in the mountains where there will be frost.

Thursday will be cloudy at intervals with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Snow is possible in the mountains and some hilly areas. The weather will gradually improve as from the afternoon. Temperatures will edge up but remain below average for the time of year.

Friday and Saturday will see intervals of sunshine as well as cloud. Temperatures will rise gradually by Saturday to close to average for the time of year.
