A 42 year old Syrian national will stand trial for the brutal murder of his estranged wife, also Syrian,  at her home in Paphos on January 2o.

With the expiry of the remand order,  the suspect was taken to Paphos district court on Friday where police announced they had concluded their invesigations and asked that the case be referred direct to trial.

The court ordered the suspect stand trial for premeditated murder. The trial date at the Criminal Court was set for March 16. The man will remain in custody pending trial.

The 31 year old woman, a mother of seven children five of whom are under 12 and live with her in Cyprus, was found stabbed to death at her home by a social worker. Three of the children were at the house when she was murdered.

The suspect was tracked down by police in hiding in Limassol three days after the murder. He initially denied any involvement but later admitted during questioning that he had killed his estranged wife for reasons of honour.

Police had told the court during the first remand hearing that they have a video-taped statement from one of the children who woke from the loud voices and saw the father stab the mother. The child also asked to draw the incident and the picture shows the father stabbing the mother, the police officer added.
