Nicosia has a new museum following the inauguration of the Hambis Municipal Museum of Printmaking by Nicosia mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis at the museum’s new premises on Ammochostou Street in the old town.

Operations begin with the temporary exhibition “From Dürer to Kanthos” that features works from the long-established Hambis Printmaking School & Museum at Platanisteia of Limassol.

The exhibition is curated by Helene Reeb Tsangari and features works from the dawn of the 16th century until the 1980s taking the visitor on a historical printmaking tour in Renaissance Germany, Russia, China, Japan, America, Greece, Cyprus and other European countries.

The exhibition features carefully selected works by prominent artists Dürer, Da Vinci, Tiziano, Callot, Poussin, Hogarth, Utamaro, Hisroshige, Toulouse Lautrec, Mexiac and Galanis.

The works are accompanied by guiding texts explaining the role of the art of printmaking as well as the techniques used in the field, and brief descriptions are also provided for a better understanding of the featured art of the temporary exhibition.

The primary aim of the museum and the exhibition is to bring the residents and visitors of Nicosia closer to the frequently undervalued art of printmaking and promote appreciation of its contribution in the shaping of masterpieces and masters.

The Hambis Municipal Museum of Prinmaking is open Tuesday – Sunday: 10:00 – 16:00
