During a meeting at the Transport Ministry yesterday, the municipalities expressed the wish to have traffic cameras in order to check specific roads and for specific offenses falling under their jurisdiction.
The issue arose after part of Makarios Avenue in Nicosia, which had been reconstructed on the basis of viable mobility, was given to the public and the drivers started ignoring the planning and breaking the law. The Nicosia Municipality request control of the specific section with cameras and the Transport Minister called a meeting of all parties involved as well as the Union of Municipalities to examine the issue more generally.
However, in order to achieve that the legislation has to be modified, so the Union of Municipalities will assign its lawyers to prepare a draft bill settling the matter.
