Many roads throughout the island are closed on Wednesday morning because of flooding and mudslides.
The met office is forecasting more rain and snow today, with the weather set to improve late in the afternoon. Temperatures tonight will fall to 4 C inland and -2 C in the mountains.
All roads to Troodos are closed where there is 62 cm of snow at Troodos Square and 75 cm on Mount Olympus.
In an early morning announcement, police said that there were problems with the road network and many roads have closed.
The following roads are closed because of mudslides or the accumulation of large amounts of water:
Paphos district: Tselefos Bridge, Zyripilli Bridge, Xeros Bridge, Salamiou-Galataria Bridge, Choletra Bridge, Kelokedara-Salamiou, Nata-Choletra, Ayios Yeorgios-Kidasi, Trachypedoula-Salamiou, Kelokedara-Filousa, Ayios Yeorgios Peyia towards Akamas, Panayia-Cedar Valley, Kanavia-Stavros tis Psokas, Panayia-Stavros tis Psokas and Lemona-Armageti.
Limassol district: Karvounas-Troodos, Platres-Troodos, Prodromos-Troodos, Paramytha-Gerasa, Saittas-Mesa Potamia, Agros-Chandria, Ayios Ioannis Agrou-Agros, Mathikoloni-Limassol, Zoopigi-Agros and Gerasa-Limassol.
Morphou area: Ayia Marna Xyliatou towards the dam because of overflowing of the dam, old Ayia Marina-Peristeronia road because of flooding of the river, Kakopetria-Pedoulas, Prodromos-Lemythou, Prodromos Paliomylos and Akaki main road because of flooding of the river
Nicosia district: Yourri-Farmakas, Lagoudera-Chandria, flooding of Pedieos River at Alexandroupolis avenue in Strovolos and in Ayios Spyridonas area in Deftera. In Pera Chorio-Dali areas Eleftheria street in Pera Chorio has closed as have Evripidou, Leontios Macheras and Theodoros Kolokotronis streets in Dali. The Kotsiatis-Ayia Varvara road and the road from Dali industrial area to Potamia are also closed.
Other roads with mudslides and flooding: On the main Evrychou-Kakopetria road near the exit to Kakopetria the road is closed because of mudslides and access to Kakopetria is through Galata and Ayios Nicolaos; Kanavia-Ayia Irene- Sylia-Kyperounta, Orkonta-Pedoulas, Kakopetria-Karvouna, Kalopanayiotis-Gerakia, Orkonta-Kambos, Kambos-Kykkos, Apliki-Palechori, Palechori-Askas-Fterikoudi- Alona-Platanistasa, Polystipos-Lagoudera-Saranti, Lazania-Macheras-Kionia.
Police said there have been mud and rock slides, while trees have been uprooted in various places on the road network, particularly in the mountain and semi-mountainous areas and drivers are urged to be particularly careful.
Drivers are urged to stay up dated on changes in road conditions from the police app and its website http://www.cypruspolicenews.com/ and social media pages.
Closed schools:
The Ministry of Education announced that four schools will be closed today due to the weather conditions:
- Agros gymnasium
- Lemythou gymnasium
- Kampos kindergarten and primary school
Weather forecast:
A low pressure system affecting the area will recede from late in the afternoon.
Today will be cloudy at intervals with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. There will be snow or sleet in the mountains. The weather will improve from late in the afternoon.
Winds will be strong and the sea rough.
Temperatures will be 14 C inland and on the west and north coasts, 15 C on remaining coasts and 2 C in the mountains.
Tonight will become gradually fine. Temperatures will fall to 4 C inland, around 7 C on the south and east coasts, around 9 C on remaining coasts and – 2 C in the mountains.
Thursday and Friday will be mainly fine. Local increased cloud is expected from Friday afternoon, mainly in the west and in the mountains. Temperatures will edge up to around average for the time of year.
Saturday will be cloudy at intervals with possible light scattered showers in places, Snow is possible in the higher Troodos peaks. Temperatures will edge down remaining close to average for the time of year.
