First coronavirus death in Turkish-held north

The first coronavirus death was reported in Turkish-held north Cyprus this morning.

The victim is a 73 year old German tourist, a man with an underlying medical condition, part of a group of tourists that were all diagnosed with the virus, from the first day of their arrival.

Ηe was being treated in critical condition at a hospital in occupied Nicosia.

The remaining tourists had been quarantined at a hotel in occupied Famagusta, with most returning home earlier this week.

61 people have been infected in northern Cyprus, out of which 29 are Turkish-Cypriots.

Thirteen of the cases were confirmed in the Rizokarpaso peninsula where Greek Cypriot enclaved also live. No enclaved are among those to have tested positive.

Fifteen villages were placed in quarantine yesterday as Turkish Cypriot authorities stepped up measures to contain the spread of Covid-19, effectively locking down most of the peninsular after initially imposing additional restrictions at three villages.

Five people have died of the virus in the government controlled areas of Cyprus, four men and one woman.
