Greece’s Kaili suspended as EU Parliament vice president in Qatar scandal

Relevant News

Greek MEP Eva Kaili was suspended from her role as vice president of the European Parliament after she was arrested in a corruption investigation on Friday.

The Parliament’s president, Roberta Metsola, suspended Kaili with immediate effect — but does not have the power to permanently remove her from the top post.

“In the light of the ongoing judicial investigations by Belgian authorities, President Metsola has decided to suspend with immediate effect all powers, duties and tasks that were delegated to Eva Kaili in her capacity as Vice-President of the European Parliament,” said a spokesperson for Metsola. One of those duties was to replace Metsola on Middle East issues.

Kaili had already been suspended by the Socialists & Democrats and expelled from the center-left Pasok party in Greece.

But she cannot be jettisoned completely from the vice president role before a vote by top political group leaders in the assembly and then the full Parliament.
