Yellow warning to come into effect as Cyprus braces for storms

The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms, high winds and potentially hail.

Effective from 6 p.m. on Saturday to 6 a.m. on Sunday the alert, notes that the initial impact is anticipated in the western and northern regions, with a subsequent progression to other areas.

Precipitation rates will range between 35 and 50 millimetres per hour, accompanied by the likelihood of hail during thunderstorms, the Department said.

Winds are expected to shift from initially southerly to southwesterly, gradually turning westward to northwesterly. Winds of force 6 to 7 Beaufort, locally escalating to 7 Beaufort, are foreseen to affect the island.

Particularly in coastal areas, locally strong to near gale-force winds are expected. These winds, blowing consistently from a force of 7 to 8 Beaufort, may escalate to gale-like conditions.
