Scala Theatre building declared unsafe

Relevant News

A few weeks after the new management took over, Scala Theatre found itself homeless as the building was deemed unsuitable and unsafe.

Issues of stability were identified in the building following an inspection, leading to an immediate decision to close the venue.

Adjustments have already been made for some of the scheduled performances to be relocated to other venues.

The Mayor of Larnaca, Andreas Vyras, told philenews last week that during checks on the stability of buildings managed by the Municipality, structural issues were identified in the space.

“We will now invite tenders for a study to determine the necessary works to address the problems that arose, as well as for the general renovation of the space.”

He further added that after the results of the structural check, there was no other option but to close the theatre.

“We cannot compromise on safety; it had to close,” Vyras said, noting that the aim is to upgrade both the theatre and its equipment.

Vyras noted that efforts are being made to find solutions for the numerous events, many of which will take place at the Oroklini Municipal Theatre and the Larnaca Municipal Theatre.

“We will also liaise with some private universities to relocate certain events there,” he added.

In a statement, the Municipality also invites all “organisations/institutions that have booked the theatre to contact the Cultural Services of Larnaca Municipality to arrange their reservations.”
