SBAs crackdown on illegal fireworks ahead of Easter

Relevant News

The British Bases Dhekelia Police have confirmed that multiple arrests have been made in joint operations ahead of Easter, along with the Cyprus Republic Police and the Customs and Immigration Department of the British Bases.

In two out of the five planned joint operations in April, arrests were made for possession of Class A drugs – crystal methamphetamine – attempted smuggling of chemicals through the checkpoint in Pergamos, and various traffic violations.

The arrests were made after the three services collaborated to combat widespread illegal distribution of fireworks and firecrackers during Easter.

The use of fireworks and makeshift explosive devices (made from pipes) is a nationwide issue, especially during the Easter period.

Senior Police Officer Michalis Angelides explained that by combining their efforts, they enable police officers and operatives to cover a much larger area and detect all crimes, not just Easter firecrackers.

He said: “We are aware, of course, that firecrackers at this time cause great concern, as they can fall into the hands of children and cause significant harm to themselves, others, and properties.

“Working side by side with our partners in the Customs and Immigration Department of the BB, the Cyprus Police, and the United Nations, we are able to exchange information and identify those attempting to illegally transport fireworks from the occupied areas to the BB and the Cyprus Republic.”

He continued to explain how other arrests are made not just for possession of illegal fireworks: “We are not on the streets trying to catch those transporting fireworks alone. Our joint efforts mean we have personnel on the ground, ready to act and make arrests for anyone attempting to break the law.

“These two operations so far underscore our joint commitment.”

As Easter is just two weeks away, BB police officers in both eastern and western areas also visited schools to inform children about the dangers of using fireworks and firecrackers.

Senior Police Officer Maria Atalioti, who leads the operation at the Akrotiri police station, said: “Our priority is to ensure the safety of our communities and to have a joyful festive period enjoyed by all, without serious incidents.

“It is important for children to understand the risks involved when playing with fireworks and firecrackers, and that’s why we actively participate in the community to ensure we get this message across.

“Easter is a time of celebration and joy. No family should mourn a loss or suffer serious injury.”
