The cooperation between the Republic of Cyprus and Lebanon for the effective management of migration was discussed during today’s meeting between the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati.

In a written statement, the Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, noted that President Christodoulides, who visited Beirut today, had a private meeting and extended discussions with the Prime Minister of Lebanon and subsequently met with the Speaker of the Parliament of the country, Nabih Berri.

During the discussions with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, it was highlighted that the migration issue is mutual, and its handling should be coordinated through joint actions.

“A very constructive discussion took place during which the cooperation between the two countries was agreed upon with the substantial assistance of the European Commission.

President Christodoulides also referred to ongoing discussions at the EU level on this issue, emphasizing that the implementation of the EU’s intentions depends on the results of actions taken by both sides to address migration and the increased flows towards Cyprus.

The Lebanese leadership recognized the urgent need and committed to intensifying efforts to monitor and identify illegal trafficking networks.

It was also agreed upon that there will be mutual commitment to implementing what has been agreed during today’s discussions, as well as coordination between Cyprus, Lebanon, and the European Commission, along with action-taking between Lebanon and the EU,” concludes the statement.
