President Nikos Christodoulides has revealed plans to gradually transform some communities and villages in Cyprus into green communities, emphasizing the need for environmental sustainability.

The announcement was made today from Dubai, where the President is participating in the Climate Change Summit, COP28.

Speaking about the summit, President Christodoulides stated, “This is one of the most significant global summits, considering the issue it addresses here in Dubai. It is not just about reviewing what we have done since 2015 and the Paris Summit; we need to accelerate the pace, especially in our country, to implement our climate strategy.”

Acknowledging that Cyprus faces unique and increased challenges due to climate change, the President highlighted that the country is already experiencing many of the impacts.

He mentioned the 2019 Cyprus Initiative for regional collaboration in addressing climate change and stressed the importance of facing this challenge collectively.

The President identified two key objectives arising from the summit discussions and bilateral meetings.

Firstly, he emphasized the need for each country to significantly accelerate its efforts. In this context, he shared that Cyprus has initiated contacts and visits to explore ways to gradually transform some communities and villages into green entities.

Secondly, he highlighted the importance of building a culture based on the understanding that the impacts of climate change affect the entire population.

He stressed the need to create awareness and urgency, especially among the younger generation, who are rightfully concerned about their future. President Christodoulides underscored the importance of cultivating a culture that addresses the challenges collectively and expeditiously to achieve the goals set since 2015.
