Police tackle fireworks offences, delinquency during Easter weekend

Police across Cyprus responded to numerous incidents over the Easter weekend, including public nuisance complaints, firework and cracker offences, and instances of youth delinquency.

Collaborating with the Fire Service, they tackled several fires and confiscated a significant quantity of fireworks and crackers. No injuries were reported.

In Nicosia, a 19-year-old driver was arrested after police found 11 firework launchers and 115 crackers in his car trunk during a traffic stop near a school. He was charged and released pending a court appearance.

Larnaca police arrested occupants of two vehicles – a 42-year-old woman with her 13-year-old child and a 49-year-old man with his 14-year-old child – after finding fireworks and crackers in their cars. All individuals were questioned and will be summoned to court.

In Paphos, a 21-year-old man was arrested for possessing 17 crackers near a church. He was charged and released pending a court date.

The most significant incident occurred in Kiti village, Larnaca. Youths caused a disturbance with a bonfire and set off crackers towards officers and a nearby resident’s house. The fire spread to cypress trees, prompting Fire Service intervention.

Police secured the area for firefighters and controlled traffic.

Despite police intervention, the youths returned and caused further damage with crackers and stones before fleeing.
