Police car torched after authorities clash with youths on Holy Saturday

Relevant News

Police in Limassol clashed with a group of roughly 100 youths on the night of Holy Saturday, with officers using chemical dispersants to break up an attack involving Molotov cocktails, fireworks, and stones.

The incident occurred around 10:30 pm on Ypsonas to Erimi road, after police responded to reports of masked youths targeting vehicles.

According to police, anti-riot units were dispatched to the scene but were met with an organised attack upon arrival.

One police vehicle was destroyed in the altercation, while four others sustained damage. The perpetrators fled the poorly lit area, but authorities recovered two bottles containing flammable liquid near the burnt-out car as evidence.

The Cyprus Police Association condemned the “unacceptable attack” on officers, vowing a “dynamic response” and emphasising that “an attack on one officer is an attack on the entire police family.”

Earlier that day, police arrested an 18-year-old Limassol resident with 1,807 firecrackers during a traffic stop. The individual was arrested, charged, and later released pending a court appearance.
