People in Cyprus manage to “co-exist” with high noise levels, studies show

Relevant News

Thousands of people in Cyprus manage to “co-exist” with noise levels above 70 decibel which is actually harmful to health. And many more basically live in areas all around Larnaca and Paphos airports and tolerate noise levels just below 45 decibels.

This is what studies on Strategic Noise Map for the Aircraft Noise presented to parliament on Tuesday show, Philenews reports citing Environment Department officer Petros Koutsoftas.

The tolerance is also due to the fact that the areas around airports are not densely populated and relatively at a distance from city centers, Koutsoftas also said.

Based on the Map, Cyprus is in a relatively good state of play within EU countries in terms of noise emissions.

In addition to the noise caused by aircraft flights recorded, people are also affected by noise caused by the movement of vehicles on the road network, as well as noise from industrial works.

In particular, with regard to the noise that people are subjected to from the operation of airports, the Map concluded in the year 2022 shows that the measurements concern around 100,000 people.

In particular, noise was considered in relation to places where 99,649 people reside. Of these, 87,057 people resided in areas where daytime noise was below 45 decibels, while at night this number increased to 93,475.

In areas with daytime noise levels between 45 and 50 decibels, 4,307 people lived in areas with daytime noise levels between 45 and 50 decibels, while at night the number was 4,443.
