Ministers commit to addressing CyBC labor dispute

Relevant News

There is a willingness from the involved Ministries of Labour, Finance, and Interior to pay the salaries for March to the employees of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) by the coming Friday, following the issue that arose due to the delayed submission of the corporation’s budget to the House of Representatives for approval, as indicated by statements from union representatives.

After a meeting on Wednesday with the Depuy Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Yiannis Panayiotou, which was predetermined to discuss other matters, the General Secretary of OHO-SEK, Andreas Ilias, stated that “there is a clear intention from everyone that salaries and the safeguarding of rational salary distribution should be done both timely and in the appropriate manner.”

He added, “We want to clarify that we will await the final results.”

Ilias noted that the Ministers of Finance, Labour, and Interior “seem to be advancing processes so that salaries can be paid by the upcoming Friday.”

“We clearly expect these assurances to materialise,” said the General Secretary of OHO-SEK.

The General Secretary of SEK-PEO, Nikos Gregoriou, stated that “since yesterday we have initiated an effort as unions to make the obvious happen, namely to pay the salaries on time and in full, as stipulated by labour legislation and as demanded by the proper regulation of labour relations.”

He added, “It appears from all involved parties that there is an intention to resolve the issue.”

As Gregoriou said, “we are closely monitoring the issue so that the desired outcome – which is to pay the salaries by Friday – is achieved to avoid any unpleasant situations.”

“We are fighting alongside the workers to resolve this issue,” stated the General Secretary of SEK-PEO.
