Migrants transported in serious condition to hospital after Cape Greco rescue

Relevant News

A major operation is currently underway at the Marina of Ayia Napa to rescue more than 60 migrants who were reportedly stranded at sea for a week.

Earlier today, the people were discovered in dire conditions aboard a vessel drifting off Cape Greco.

Emergency services are on-site providing essential first aid. Those requiring further medical attention are being transported to local hospitals.

Helicopters have airlifted four migrants, among them three children, to the Famagusta and Larnaca hospitals. Upon arrival, rescuers found three children and a man unconscious, with three others suffering from lower limb fractures. Two of the children were admitted to Famagusta Hospital in critical condition.

The Port Authority’s vessel crew immediately administered CPR and first aid. The operation intensified with the deployment of an additional vessel from the Port Authority and Maritime Police, a Police helicopter, and another from the National Guard.

These units are responsible for carrying critically ill and injured individuals to the hospitals in Famagusta and Nicosia, accompanied by nurses.

The National Search and Rescue Plan “NEARCHOS” was activated, further mobilising a Port Authority and Maritime Police vessel to safely transport all individuals to Ayia Napa Marina.

Early reports suggest the vessel had been missing for a week, with the migrants unable to reach the shores of Cyprus due to adverse weather conditions.
