Kazamias refutes having banking background, responds to president

Relevant News

“Never have I claimed or declared that I am a banker but an honest collaborator,” states former Minister of Finance Kikis Kazamias in a statement, referring to comments made by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides.

Specifically, the response of the former Finance Minister was provoked by the President’s reply to criticism from AKEL regarding the appointment of the new governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus.

The President had stated that he did not expect such a comment from AKEL, with Christodoulides asserting, “Under AKEL’s governance, we had three Finance Ministers who were bankers. Therefore, before making statements, it’s wise to be a bit cautious.”

“Since President Christodoulides has added himself to a series of his Democratic Rally party comrades who have been echoing the narrative of the three ‘banker’ ministers for the past twelve years under Christofias’ governance, I feel obliged to respond that, as far as I am concerned, I have never claimed or declared that I am a banker but an honest collaborator,” Kazamias states in his response.

He adds that it was his honour to have served as the general manager of the Co-operative Savings Bank of Limassol, which the whole of Limassol was proud of for its contribution and which was taken away by the government faithfully served by Mr Christodoulides in the banking sector, depriving Limassol of a significant social achievement.
