Minister of Justice Marios Hartsiotis emphasised in his first appearance in Parliament and the Legal Affairs Committee that the safety of citizens and public order is the cornerstone of his tenure.
He reiterated that he does not have a magic wand and questioned whether, after the recent violent incidents at stadiums, measures should be taken to address the situation, rather than avoiding them.
Within 48 hours, he stressed, we had a crime that we did not have before, and at the same time, there were incidents at football stadiums.
“I couldn’t take drastic measures in 24 hours. That’s why the instructions to the Police were to safeguard human life.”
