Historic Limassol music hall to be declared listed building

Relevant News

Limassol Municipality has initiated procedures to declare Solon Michaelides’ historic music hall a listed building, indicating that they will not permit its demolition.

The issue came to public attention through social media posts, followed by an announcement by the Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation Movement, stating that efforts have begun by a group of architects and activists to prevent its demolition by the new owner.

Yesterday afternoon, following online disagreements and debates, Limassol Mayor Nikos Nicolaides and members of the municipal council visited Georgiou Gennadiou Street, outside the abandoned building, and reassurances were given about its preservation.

Specifically, as Nicolaides stated, as soon as the Municipality was informed, mainly through online posts, about the possibility of the building’s demolition, “we notified Limassol Police Headquarters and sent municipal crews to prevent any demolition attempts.”

“Tomorrow (today), Monday, the process to immediately declare this building as listed will commence due to its historical and architectural value,” the Mayor of Limassol said, adding that “from the investigation conducted, no demolition request has been identified, nor will a demolition permit be issued.”

Asked about it, the Limassol Mayor mentioned that the Municipality will communicate today with the owners, “to inform them of our intentions regarding such buildings, so that there are clear accounts for everyone.”
