Floods hit several areas of Cyprus

Relevant News

Yesterday, several neighbourhoods in Cyprus were submerged due to heavy rainfall, with an underground bridge in Nea Lefka closing due to overflow.

A driver was at risk and houses and properties were flooded.

The intense weather phenomena are expected to gradually weaken, but rain and cloudy conditions are forecasted for the coming days.

Regarding the underground bridge leading to Nea Lefka, water levels rose significantly, with torrential waters forcing the road’s closure.

A driver was captured on video attempting to cross the flooded area, putting herself in serious danger and her vehicle disappearing into the floodwaters.

According to the Fire Service spokesperson, Andreas Ketti, during yesterday’s day, the Lefkosia district alone received a total of 30 calls related to problems caused by the heavy rains in the wider area.

The calls involved pumping rainwater from underground areas and properties, clearing rainwater drains from public roads, and towing vehicles from flooded streets with passengers onboard.

Flooding in houses and properties was also recorded in Kivisili and several other areas in the Larnaca district.

The low-pressure system affecting the region is gradually weakening and moving away. Today, initially, locally increased cloudiness is expected, which early on may result in isolated showers in the east.

From noon onwards, clouds are expected to bring isolated showers or/and thunderstorms across the rest of the island.

Tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday, during the morning hours, locally increased low cloudiness will be observed, with fog forming in places in the east and inland. From noon onwards, isolated showers or/and thunderstorms are not excluded.

However, temperatures are expected to rise from tomorrow, and until Saturday, they will remain at the same levels, to then fluctuate above the average climatic values for this season.
