Family files negligence complaint after hospital death

Relevant News

The family of a 54-year-old man who died suddenly in Nicosia General Hospital has filed a medical negligence complaint with police, prompting an investigation.

Relatives allege that inadequate medical care led to the man’s death. According to the complaint, he was admitted to the hospital’s Emergency Department on March 25, 2024, after fainting.

Initial tests showed no serious conditions, and he was transferred to the Pathology Department for respiratory failure. Six days later, on March 31, he suffered cardiac arrest and died.

The family claims that doctors failed to fully assess the man’s condition. They allege that he did not receive the necessary specialist care or treatment for the respiratory issues that led to his initial hospitalisation.

The family’s lawyer, Kyriakos Andreakou, asserts that a failure to identify life-threatening risks resulted in the man’s death. They have requested an autopsy and additional examinations while pursuing legal action.

A police source confirmed that the Nicosia Central Police Station is investigating the case. Investigators have asked the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) to appoint a medical expert to assist in determining if negligence occurred.

SHSO spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou declined to comment, citing the ongoing police investigation.
