Elderly man convicted of shooting thief discharged from hospital

Relevant News

This afternoon (22/3), Limassol General Hospital discharged 82-year-old grandfather Chrysanthos.

He had been sentenced to an immediate prison term of two and a half years for shooting a would-be thief who had entered his property with the intent to steal electrical cables from his house on the night of 11th June 2023, in Alasia.

The 82-year-old has been hospitalized and guarded in a room of the Pathology Department of Limassol General Hospital for the past 14 days, as his health condition worsened following the convicting decision of the Permanent Criminal Court of Limassol on 6th March.

After receiving the necessary medical care, the attending physicians monitoring him deemed his health condition to be stable.

Thus, he was discharged from the hospital this afternoon and is subsequently expected to be taken to the Limassol Police Detention Centre temporarily.

In a statement to philenews, the son of the 82-year-old, Giannakis Chrysanthou, stated that the doctors had informed him of the discharge since Thursday as his father’s health condition does not currently pose any concerns.

“With the discharge, it is expected that he will be taken to the Central Prisons; however, we still do not know exactly when. On our part, we will request that our father serves his sentence under electronic monitoring until the process is completed before the Court of Appeal,” Giannakis said.

As philenews can confirm, the Hospital has informed Limassol Police Directorate about the discharge of the 82-year-old.

The usual procedure followed is for the detainee to be picked up by a patrol car and subsequently taken to the Directorate’s detention facilities.

Once the Central Prisons are notified and there is an available transportation vehicle (van), then the detainee is picked up on the same day.

In the case of the 82-year-old, according to reliable information from our website, he will remain in a cell at Limassol Police Detention Centre until the coming Tuesday.

It is reminded that the lawyers of the convicted 82-year-old have already filed an appeal against the initial decision of the Permanent Criminal Court of Limassol since last Thursday (14/3).

As previously reported by philenews, the lawyers’ request is for the appeal to be expedited. In their comprehensive appeal notification, the lawyers challenge the decision of the first-instance court (Permanent Criminal Court of Limassol), believing that the imposed sentence was not appropriate under the circumstances.

They also argue that the request for a suspended sentence should have been accepted, taking into account all mitigating factors.

Moreover, they rely on the serious health problems faced by the 82-year-old convict, the uniqueness of the case, the particular events, his personal circumstances, and his age.

The 82-year-old was convicted on 6th March 2023, after admitting to the charge of acts aiming to cause serious bodily harm, to two and a half years of imprisonment because he shot a 67-year-old who was attempting to steal electrical cables from his house in Alasia.
