Economic conditions not static, DISY MP warns

Relevant News

“Today, the issue is not how to further increase the state’s revenue but to keep the productive fabric, the middle class, and small and medium-sized enterprises on the right track, so they can continue to create jobs and future revenue for the state” said the spokesperson for DISY (Democratic Rally) and MP Onoufrios Koullas.

He continued: “If the middle class and small and medium-sized enterprises are irreparably harmed, then the state’s revenues will decrease in the medium term,” further noting that the government fails to understand that economic conditions are not static and differ significantly from a few years ago.

“For example, just two years ago, we had very low interest rates, whereas today we have the exact opposite. The same applies to food and energy prices,” he explained, adding that “emergency and temporary support measures are certainly needed, focusing on vulnerable population groups. However, because we unfortunately anticipate that the cost of living will continue to rise in the coming years, a holistic approach is now needed, not one-off measures that the government resorts to every 1-2 months.”

Koullas referred to measures based on serious and accurate assessments, “not populist, unfeasible, and superficial proposals from other parties. Policies that will achieve permanent and substantial results and ensure social cohesion and the stability of our economy, not the opposite.”

“We have already said that the 5% increase in the child allowance is insufficient, at least for families with three or more children. Based on the above analysis and findings, we proposed a targeted tax measure for middle-income families where one of the two spouses is low-paid.

Let’s keep in mind that from the fuel tax that will be imposed next week, the state will have an additional and permanent revenue of €60 million annually. This opportunity should be invested correctly in our economy,” concludes the DISY announcement.
